“My
earliest inclinations as a sculptor have been involved with an artistic
concept known as "process aesthetic", the emergence of sculptural
composition from raw material. A parallel interest in carving the human
vestige in stone led to three tours of duty, as the Sculptor-In-Residence
of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. My labors and studies continue
to pursue an understanding of the work ethic and the unique applications
required to tender the essence of character and to project emotional
intelligence from within a block of raw stone. As a result, my sculptural
process has become a refined blend of both traditional and unorthodox
techniques that translate well into my lecture and workshop programs”.
Monumental
Sculpture Of The American West Lecture
DJ
Garrity offers a unique perception of colossal art, which he shares
with a
behind the scenes PowerPoint presentation that delves into the
creation of both
the Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials. The
artist presents a wide view of the genre from the birth of three-dimensional
art to the multi-faceted influences of sculptural masters such as, Auguste
Rodin, Constantin Brancusi and Allen Houser of the American
Southwest.
The
presentation is in part a travelogue with a colossal view to the art of
stone carving
against the magnificent backdrop of the National Parks in
the American West.
The lecture is approximately two hours in duration.
