MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE OF
THE AMERICAN WEST LECTURE
DJ Garrity
presents a limited series of lectures each year that encompass the history of
stone
sculpture from the tri-spiral carvings of Newgrange, Co. Meath, Ireland
to the creation of
America's "Shrine of Democracy", the Mount Rushmore National
Memorial. The artist
presents a wide view of the genre from the birth of three-dimensional art to
ground breaking
European innovations and the multi-faceted influences of sculptural masters
such as, Auguste
Rodin, Constantin Brancusi, Isamu Noguchi and Allan Houser. The lecture
concludes with a
PowerPoint presentation on the creation of monumental sculpture in the
American west, a
behind the scenes look at the inspiration, process and cultural impact of colossal
sculpture.
